In The Impostor, every round uses a word pair — two related words from the same category. Citizens receive one word (the Citizen word) while the Impostor receives the other (the Impostor word) in Mysterious mode, or no word at all in Classic mode. The key to great word pairs is that they are similar enough for the Impostor to blend in, but different enough for sharp players to notice inconsistencies in clues.
For example, in the Animals theme, a word pair might be 'Dog' and 'Wolf'. Both are canines, so the Impostor could give clues like 'pack' or 'howl' that work for both words. But a Citizen who says 'fetch' or 'leash' is clearly talking about a dog, not a wolf. This tension between similarity and specificity is what makes The Impostor so engaging to play.
When setting up a game in The Impostor, the host selects a theme from the lobby screen. The chosen theme determines the pool of word pairs available for that round. Each word pair consists of a Citizen word and an Impostor word — these are related terms from the same category that are close enough to create strategic ambiguity.
In Classic mode, Citizens see the Citizen word and the Impostor sees no word at all. In Mysterious mode, Citizens see the Citizen word while the Impostor sees the Impostor word — a related but different term from the same pair. This design means the Impostor's clues in Mysterious mode might accidentally match the theme, making detection much harder.
You can also select 'All Themes' to combine every word pack into one massive pool. This option is perfect for groups that play frequently and want maximum variety, as the game will randomly draw from over 1,800 word pairs across all categories.
